MUMBAI’s famous Ahakzai Boutique, owned by Indian designer Ashley Rebello and Salman Khan’s sister Alvira Khan Agnihotri, is now in Malaysia thanks to local partner Anju Menon.

Bollywood fashion lovers now have the chance to buy designer materials from Rebello, a celebrated fashion designer who has clothed the likes of Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan and Malaika Arora Khan.

The outlet, the first store outside India and the second for the brand, was recently launched by Bollywood actress Waluscha De Souza as well as Rebello with Anju’s friends and family present.

Speaking to StarMetro at the launch, Anju, an Indian expatriate, said the idea spurred from the compliments she received after sporting some of Rebello’s designs purchased from the Mumbai store.

“We went looking for the store after my husband, a huge Salman Khan fan, suggested it. I loved all the designs and ended up picking up a few pieces, my first designer clothes,” she said.

She came back and wore some of the pieces to events and dinner parties, prompting people from different nationalities to complement her ensemble.

Anju said she received many queries on the designer and boutique, so she decided to get in touch with Rebello.

Finally after months of hard work, she succeeded in bringing the brand into Malaysia and has even made it a point to price it on par with the price point in India, if not cheaper.

“I thought it would be great if it was available here in Malaysia where designs like these are well priced and not readily available,” she added.

Rebello, meanwhile, said they first opened the store three years ago and named the brand after Salman Khan’s father’s native Afghanistani tribe.

“The tribe is hardworking and self-motivated and we believe that embodies Ahakzai. We have always thought of venturing out and received a number of offers as well,” he said.

However, Anju’s earnestness and her passion impressed the Mumbai team and her offer was the one they picked.

He said they did not want to give the franchise to just anybody, especially since it was a project close to their heart.

Talking about the collection, Rebello said they offered a well-priced range of outfits that were ready to wear, including formal wear.

“All the fabrics are natural, we do not use synthetic materials so it is easy to breathe and we also try to make cottons look really good for formal events,” he added.

Rebello said he noticed a lot of Malays used long shirts and tunics that Ahakzai also provides.

He said he could see locals wearing their tunics that are easily paired with jeans and complemented by a shawl.

Ahakzai also features other designers, including White Noise, a group of young designers, as well as designers from Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

“This means we will get different designers to show at different times in our stores, including the one here in Malaysia, so you do not get the same designs,” Rebello explained.

The current trend in India now, he said, were prints such as Jaipuri prints, crepes, silks and Zardozi embroidery with dull work as well chiffons and pastels for the Deepavali season.

All these have been incorporated in the new collection that is available in the Mont Kiara store too.

Fashion shows with the local community to showcase the diverse collection are in the pipeline.

Rebello also said he would return to check on the progress and feedback from the community since he will be down for the Da-Bangg Tour in March 2018.

They are also looking at opening up several branches in Singapore, Hong Kong and Jakarta.

Dressed in Ahakzai’s Malaika outfit in a beautiful turquoise named after Malaika Arora Khan, De Souza was all smiles at the launch.

Singing praises for the brand, the actress, who recently paired with Shah Rukh Khan in the movie Fan, said she dressed herself in Rebello’s designs at every opportunity.

“He has designs that are fit for any occasion, from the simpler ones to the heavy designs.

“The designs are very close to who I am and they are all very comfortable,” she added.Read more at:mermaid wedding dresses | wedding dresses 2017
