Plex is beginning to test its “newly reimagined Plex experience,” which will be available first on mobile and is coming to TV platforms “very soon.” Plex says the new experience has been in development for almost two years and is “designed to bring everything you love into one seamless interface.” But don’t worry — while the new version of the app is currently missing some features, Plex says it will be “closing those gaps” and will keep the current app available during the preview, which will hopefully prevent a Sonos-like debacle.

Helping people navigate the app is one of the main drivers behind the overhaul. Plex says that the rework helps existing users move around the app more intuitively, while making things easier for newcomers to get to grips with. Those who use Plex to access personal media will find that their libraries are in a dedicated tab, while the Watchlist will take up prime real estate in the top navigation section. Plex says it also streamlined the user menu for quick access to things like your profile, friends and watch history.

Under the hood, Plex says that it has rewritten its apps and unified its codebase to create a more consistent experience. “With this new unified approach, our team can collaborate across platforms seamlessly, ensuring that each new feature, update, and improvement is available on most platforms from day one, once the migration is complete,” according to Plex.
Navigation is a key element of the update. The preview version “makes it easier to dive into the different parts of Plex and discover content with simplicity,” the company said. “We’ve brought our core features to the forefront, saying goodbye to the days of hidden hamburger menus and making it easier to explore with one hand on your phone.”
The redesign seems long overdue. Plex looks a bit dated at the minute, especially when you hold it up against the likes of the Netflix app. Any navigation upgrades will be very welcome. Here's hoping download speeds have been improved as well — as it stands, it takes me far too long to snag anything from Plex for offline viewing.
To that end, the blog post noted that the company has now “centralized media libraries into a dedicated tab. With the option to favorite libraries and easily access power-user features, it becomes a more personalized experience.”
