Vinny, founder of Sexindoll, told this reporter that since the outbreak of the epidemic this year, the company's export of adult dolls overseas orders began to increase, especially from the United States.<o:p></o:p>

This trend is corroborated by data from Global Express, China's largest cross-border retail e-commerce platform, which has direct contact with individual overseas buyers from more than 200 countries and regions. So far this year, exports of adult products have increased by almost 50% year-on-year, while sales of physical dolls have doubled, according to Global Express. Since March, sales of live dolls in the US have increased fivefold year-on-year.<o:p></o:p>

In mid-July, a reporter visited a TPE doll factory in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. "Currently, our factory produces 3,000 to 4,000 dolls a month, most of which are exported to other overseas markets in the US," said Vinny, the factory manager. "Last year, we exported 90 per cent of our dolls, but this year, with the domestic market and the Asian market starting to pick up, the export percentage is around 80 per cent."<o:p></o:p>

According to Vinny, demand for live dolls in overseas markets has increased year on year since a few years ago, with the company's exports increasing by more than 100 per cent during this year's epidemic. "The biggest increase in orders came from the US. The only thing that has affected us is the increase in freight costs. Many shipping routes have been closed and we have been forced to go by sea."<o:p></o:p>

"When it comes to sex dolls, many people may still think of them as inflatables, but the material has been updated many times." Vinny describes.<o:p></o:p>

Eight years ago, the TPE material with the scientific name Thermoplastic Elastomer, also known as artificial rubber, started being used to make dolls. In recent years, the latest material has been silicone. Due to its high plasticity, imitation silicone can be better, but it also costs more, so many companies only use it to make doll heads.<o:p></o:p>

The doll's head is made of silicone with human hair implanted in the hair. most of the adult dolls produced at the Vinny factory are for export, so we can see yellow, white and black dolls of different skin tones and various body types being made in the factory. Pouring the rubber into a mould containing an alloy skeleton gives birth to a 1.65m high doll weighing around 35kg.

"In the initial stages, we asked the designers to design the faces according to the aesthetic standards of different countries. Then we launched an online survey asking local people what they liked. We now offer over 160 face shapes to choose from." Vinnie said. "For body types, we have human upside down models, even with the same joints." There are chubby sex dolls, skinny sex dolls, Japanese sex dolls, black sex dolls, mature sex dolls, young sex dolls and more

At the factory, some workers were pouring glue into the moulds, others were using electric fusion guns to trim the freshly formed dolls, while others were giving eyes and make-up to the dolls' heads.

"Now we have luxury dolls with human hair and eyebrows implanted one by one, instead of wigs and silicone heads, so head imitation can be done very well. We've even been able to create subcutaneous veins, which is a far cry from what we imagine inflatable dolls to be." Vinnie said.

High imitation has also pushed up the price, with a basic doll made entirely of TPE selling for around $500 and a highly realistic silicone head and human hair doll costing more than $8,000. Add in features such as heat and voice and it can sell for as much as $20,000.

According to Vinny, the factory can even handle custom doll business. "We have not done this kind of business in China, but we have done it overseas. A widowed elderly person can provide a few photos of his wife and we can make a 1:1 doll with his wife's likeness. The function of the doll is not only to solve sexual needs, but also companionship. Companionship is really important to humans."<o:p></o:p>

Fang Jie, the company's brand leader, said that according to survey feedback, the doll's voice interaction is too simple and not smart enough, a shortcoming pointed out by many users. As a next step, the company will strengthen its R&D and cooperation to enhance the voice function of the physical dolls, and may implant AI functions in the future. Meanwhile, dolls with walking functions are the next step in the company's development direction.

Sexindoll reveals that according to their user survey, the majority of Chinese users who buy the company's physical doll products are middle to high-income men between the ages of 30 and 35.

"There is a serious imbalance in the ratio of men to women in China. Over 30 million Chinese men are single. I think the potential market demand for adult dolls is huge and can be described as 'rigid demand'."
