Michelle Obama Channels Jacqueline Kennedy and Secures Her Legacy as Fashion Icon

It has been almost eight years since Michelle Obama took the stage with new President Barack Obama in a Jason Wu one-shouldered white gown for the first Inaugural Ball in 2009, and we’re still just as enraptured by her personal style. As First Lady on the world stage, and wife and mother behind the scenes, Mrs. Obama has deftly transitioned between casual and stately occasions without faltering. In taking a distinctly democratic approach to dressing, she is outfitted in a high-low mix of mass retail and established labels, and perhaps the truest indicator of her razor-sharp fashion acumen is her predilection for new and noteworthy design talent. Over the years, the First Lady has helped raise the profiles of a stack of America’s up-and-coming talent, and at last night’s White House state dinner, Brandon Maxwell became the newest addition. “It has been an incredible honor for me and my team to create this dress for the First Lady,” wrote Maxwell in a statement issued by his PR rep. “Strong and elegant, she is the embodiment of the woman that inspires me to create, and a role model for women all over the world.”

For one of her last official events as First Lady, Obama stunned in a strapless ivory column created by the homegrown designer (and longtime stylist to Lady Gaga). Maxwell, who earlier this summer took home the award for emerging womenswear designer from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, only made his debut at New York Fashion Week last September, but his latest look recalled another onetime Washington icon famous for her fashion choices: Jacqueline Kennedy. The wide pleat at the bust and the cascading train draped behind were details reminiscent of the bubblegum pink silk shantung evening dress by Guy Douvier for Christian Dior that Kennedy wore in 1962 to receive the French minister of culture, André Malraux, at one of her last dinners. Eschewing long white gloves, Obama kept the focus on her toned arms and sleek hairstyle, punctuated solely by a sparkling set of drop earrings, and cemented her legacy as not only an utterly irreplaceable advocate for American fashion and style, but one seriously hard act to follow.
